NRIC saves over 50 storks’ nests
02/03/2010

Bulgaria’s National Railway Infrastructure Company (NRIC) is saving more than 50 storks’ nests, the company announced.

Despite its current woes, NRIC will allocate money to install over 50 platforms in February and build nests in early March. They will be completed just before the arrival of the storks. Thus the heralds of spring will find new and, most of all, save homes. The funds have been donated by the municipalities of Maritsa and Stara Zagora and United Bulgarian Bank.

NRIC is a state-run company that streamlines, overhauls, maintains and operates Bulgaria’s railway infrastructure, including the metal posts of the grid close to the railway lines. Storks often build their nests on the top of the posts, posing a threat of a short circuit. On the one hand, the nest might be destroyed and storks might die and, on the other, railway transport might experience problems.

Currently there are more than 50 at-risk storks’ nests built on railway posts.

NRIC and Bulgarian Society for Protection of Birds are working on the project together, with the latter monitoring the results.
